Message from the Berliner Philharmoniker to the Japanese people

ベルリン・フィルでは、東北関東大地震のニュースを大きな衝撃をもって受け止めております。震災後の状況を受けて、オーケストラと指揮者のベルナルド・ハイティンクは、3月18日の演奏会を日本の皆様に捧げることにいたしました。この模様は、デジタル・コンサートホールでも中継されます。
コンサートでは、予定されていたウェーベルン《夏の風のなかで》の代りに、ルトスワフスキ「弦楽のための哀悼曲」が演奏されます。その他のプログラムは、これまでに発表されていたものと同様です。ルトスワフスキ「交響曲第４番」の後、レイフ・オヴェ・アンスネスの独奏で、ブラームス「ピアノ協奏曲第２番」が上演されます。
ヘルベルト・フォン・カラヤンとの初来日（1957年）以来、ベルリン・フィルは日本の聴衆と深いつながりを持ってきました。楽団全体のツアーと、室内アンサンブル公演との両方で、数限りなく客演を重ねています。音楽的な交流も盛んであり、この２月には、細川俊夫のホルン協奏曲が、当団で世界初演されました。また来る５月には、佐渡裕が初めて我々の指揮台に立つことになっています。オーケストラには、第１コンサートマスターの樫本大進をはじめ、日本人奏者も数名所属しています。

The Berliner Philharmoniker have followed the catastrophe in Japan resulting from the recent earthquake with great concern. As an expression of their sympathy, the orchestra and their conductor Bernard Haitink are dedicating the broadcast of their concert on Friday, 18 March to the Japanese people.
At the beginning of the concert, Martin Hoffmann, General Manager of the Foundation Berliner Philharmoniker, will make a short speech. The orchestra will then play Witold Lutosławskis Funeral Music for string orchestra in place of the originally planned Im Sommerwind by Anton Webern. The rest of the programme remains unchanged:  Lutosławskis Fourth Symphony will be followed by Johannes Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 2 with Leif Ove Andsnes as soloist.
Ever since their first concert tour with Herbert von Karajan in 1957, the Berliner Philharmoniker and Japanese audiences have had very close ties. Numerous tours by the orchestra and its chamber music ensembles have strengthened this connection. The Berliner Philharmoniker also have a long tradition of working with Japanese musicians. This season, the orchestra gave the premiere of the horn concerto by Toshio Hosokawa in February, and the conductor Yutaka Sado makes his Philharmonic debut in May. Several members of the Berliner Philharmoniker also come from Japan, including the concertmaster Daishin Kashimoto.

Mit Bestürzung verfolgen die Berliner Philharmoniker die Katastrophen, die sich als Folge des jüngsten Erdbebens in Japan ereignen. Zum Zeichen ihrer Anteilnahme widmen das Orchester und Dirigent Bernard Haitink ihre Konzertübertragung am Freitag, dem 18. März, dem japanischen Volk.

Zu Beginn des Konzerts hält Martin Hoffmann, Intendant der Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker, eine kurze Ansprache. Anschließend spielen die Musiker Witold Lutosławskis Trauermusik für Streichorchester anstelle der ursprünglich geplanten Tondichtung Im Sommerwind von Anton Webern. Das weitere Programm bleibt unverändert: Auf Lutosławskis Vierte Symphonie folgt das Klavierkonzert Nr. 2 von Johannes Brahms mit Leif Ove Andsnes als Solist.

Seit ihrer ersten Konzertreise unter Herbert von Karajan im Jahr 1957 sind die Berliner Philharmoniker und das japanische Publikum einan­der eng verbunden. Zahllose Tourneen des Orchesters und seiner Kammermusikensem­bles haben den Kontakt gefestigt. Auch die Zusammenarbeit mit japanischen Musikern hat bei den Berliner Philharmonikern eine lange Tradition. In dieser Saison hat das Orchester im Februar das Hornkonzert von Toshio Hosokawa uraufgeführt, und im Mai wird der Dirigent Yutaka Sado sein philharmonisches Debüt geben. Mehrere Mitglieder der Berliner Philharmoniker stammen zudem aus Japan, darunter der Konzertmeister Daishin Kashimoto.
